In January, vogue called the peplum “spring’s biggest silhouette
story”, a statement which, I eagerly hoped, meant that the peplum would
gently breeze away from popularity. I don’t know
why, but I never warmed to the abstract peplum shape, I think i’ve
always associated with a woman’s sneaky attempt at hiding a bloated or
over indulged stomach rather than being anything truly cool. However,
the verdict is in, and the peplum is going nowhere. SOB. Well, I sobbed
at first, but as any true fashion robot, and having seen a black peplum
dress in topshop the other day that looked surprisingly elegant, I have
decided to give the peplum a second chance, the lucky thing.
peplums were introduced in the 19
th century. They are an
extra material that is sewn on tops, pants or skirts to provide the
illusion of curvy hips or waist. This trend had its heydays in the 40’s
and 80’s and now it’s back . With peplums, you don’t need to
accessorize much so you won’t end up looking too busy which may put your
peplums away from the attention. With the variety of versatile peplum dresses to choose from, there’s always the design and color, there’s always something for everyone.
The peplum skirt creates the illusion of perfect symmetry on the
body. The fabric overlaying the hips makes them seem proportionate to
the shoulders. Let the peplum skirt take centre stage in your wardrobe
by styling it with a plain singlet.
Be mindful, once again, of your body type when picking this style for
the co
ming season. If you have a larger bottom, a peplum skirt wouldn’t
be a wise choice for you and you should opt for the peplum top instead.
have always admired Blake Lively
style. when i saw this photo of hers
rocking the black peplum dress i
dint "curse" the peplum anymore
my thoughts were "wow, darm that looks hot"
Guess the peplum is here to stay and with the small stomach that i have developed of late read am shedding the excess fat soon then the peplum it is a must have for now.
I have come up with a few Dos and Donts for wearing a peplum
DO
- Wear peplum with trousers, skinny or wide-legged pants, all depending on how long your legs are.
- Style the colours according to the proportion of your body. For
example: wear a darker tone peplum at the top to minimise broad
shoulders and larger busts and team it with a lighter shade at the
bottom. On the other hand a dark colour on the bottom with a light
peplumed top visually slims the bottom half.
- Allow peplums to make friends with other key trend pieces in your wardrobe Don’t be afraid to style prints, lace or mesh detailing with
the peplum.
DONT
- Wear ankle strap shoes . Since the horizontal line of
the peplum is already breaking the natural long lines of the body, avoid
another distraction. Wear court shoes or ankle booties.
- Choose fabrics that cling to you body, especially if you’re
conscious. The peplum dress can be nasty in exemplifying every curve of
your body. Pick from knits, chiffon and light cotton.
- Mindlessly shop without giving your body a preview of the peplum. Do
go to the shops and try on a few peplum pieces to test drive their fit
on your body before making a purchase
